Soul-Centered Education
With Spiritual Psychology as USM's curriculum, Soul-Centered education refers to USM's delivery system. Classes are taught in a manner consistent with curriculum; they are:
- Highly Experiential - While the acquisition of knowledge is important, it is only when knowledge is tested in the crucible of experience that wisdom emerges. Therefore, most class time is used in applying new information presented so that learning occurs experientially. Each class is actually an experiential learning laboratory.
- Relevant and Practical - All new information has value in that it is immediately usable rather than simply theoretical. By the time the very first class is over, students will have learned
principles and skills they can apply, enhancing nearly every area of their lives.
- Heartfelt - What all principles and skills learned at USM have in common is that they are totally consistent with an orientation designed to assist people in enhancing their ability to tap into the Love, Peace, Joy, and Compassion that reside at the Authentic Self Level. To do this, students must learn how to get out of their heads and into their hearts.
- Transformational - When an educational process is highly experiential, relevant and practical, and heartfelt, participants experience themselves transforming in two distinct, yet mutually related ways. Their consciousness awakens, expands, and uplifts, which results in their lives transforming positively. These are natural and automatic consequences.
- Creative and Innovative - As transformation occurs, students open up to new levels of creativity that had previously been dormant. Within an atmosphere of mutual support and encouragement, coupled with a supportive educational structure and process, newly recognized creative impulses are channeled into positive expression.
- Inspirational - As students experience greater levels of creativity and develop the interpersonal and project management skills to give them positive expression, they create the opportunities for themselves to fulfill their deepest aspirations. This leads to each student discovering and implementing effective and fulfilling ways for making a lasting and meaningful contribution in the world.
- Academically Excellent - At USM, we recognize that there is a newly developing as well as an ancient body of knowledge with which graduate students should be familiar. We encourage class discussions that relate this knowledge to what is being learned experientially so that we may truly understand what others have discovered. Our goal is to honor those who have preceded us and, by standing on their shoulders, see further than they saw, thus adding to the art and science of Spiritual Psychology.
- Fun - The joy of learning speaks for itself. Whoever said learning couldn’t be fun? At USM, we laugh a lot, not at each other but with each other, as we share our humanity and uncover the joy of the Authentic Self.
These eight elements are hallmarks of, and integral to, the USM educational experience.
